DH Builders is a family business, run by owner Dominic Hearne.
We take on small to medium sized building projects ranging in value from a few thousand up to half a million pounds.
What we offer
Whether a home extension or alteration, office or loft conversion, roofing and lead work or a complete remodelling of a space, we project manage from start to finish, coordinating our trusted subcontractors with our core team of permanent staff.
We are passionate about our projects because we love what we do – and ultimately, want you to love it too.

How we work
We like to be involved in your plans as early as possible, as this is where we can really add value to your project. Making sure we’re all on the same page is paramount and spending that extra time upfront ensures that things run smoothly later on.
Over the years we’ve have immensely enjoyed each and every project, as no two jobs are the same. But what we’ve enjoyed almost as much as the actual building work, is the idea creation and discussion upfront about what is possible.
We love being able to use our experience to give advice and help clients arrive at a final vision that may not be what they had originally imagined – or find a way to make their dreams a reality, when they had thought it wasn’t within their reach.

About Dominic
I’ve always been creative and loved making things, and spent a lot of time as a teenager working in family businesses across plumbing, building and landscaping. So after I left school, it was an easy choice to study Three-dimensional design at university, followed by a year gaining experience working in the metal moulding and heavy engineering industry. I then decided that I wanted to work with more than just metals so went back to university to complete my PGCE (teacher training) and spent 9 years teaching Design & Technology at various schools and colleges in the Portsmouth area.
Every day I was able to work with skills I’d learned over the years – carpentry, ceramics, metalwork, technical drawing, graphic design, engineering (specifically lathe work and milling), but also taught me how to effectively plan, project manage and communicate – and also deal with some tricky customers!
I also taught carpentry and engineering for the further education classes during this time, but after this period of teaching, I decided to widen my horizons and really put my skills to the test by working for myself as a builder. Happily though, over my 15 years as a builder, I have been able to maintain my passion for teaching through on the job training and professional development for my team.
As a builder, I put the same passion into my work that I did as a teacher. I don’t do things the quick and easy way if it’s not the right way, and I like to keep a tidy and organised site. We focus on one project at a time, never leaving your site at a standstill and I don’t employ people who don’t also have my attention to detail or same mindset.
As with my team, I like to pass my skills and passion onto my own three children with building projects at home. We’ve built walls, fitted bathrooms, painted houses and laid floors together – and our current project is a new chicken coop and run at the end of the garden! I’ve gutted and developed houses for my family over the years and can’t see that stopping anytime soon – there’s always something to do!
